This poster presents an overview of the GIS-based digital flow-channel and cartographic depth-to-water mapping process for the city of Fredericton, New Brunswick. At the foundation of this process is the digital elevation model (DEM) and the digitized locations of all open-water features of the area, i.e. streams, river, lakes, etc. This map may serve residents and would-be residents to estimate the extent to which their houses and properties may be subject to flooding, or incur flows and seepage from upland areas. City planners, land developers, teachers and real estate agents may also wish to take note. Be informed, however, that this is not a legally binding document. Instead, its intent is to be informative, from a purely educational point of view, and to allow for a greater appreciation of urban planning, urban development, urban forestry, and urban drainage systems. |
